The Estate of Fred Herzog
October 1, 2026 - January 11, 2027
Equinox Gallery is pleased to present You Are Here, an exhibition of photographs taken by German-Canadian photographer Fred Herzog during the 1950s and 60s. Although Herzog photographed neighbourhoods throughout Vancouver for over 50 years, this exhibition presents a selection of images taken within a five-square kilometer radius of the Fairmont Pacific Rim, offering a glimpse into the city’s history through the eyes of a pioneering figure in early colour street photography.
This is an off-site exhibition, located at the Fairmont Pacific Rim:

Fred Herzog immigrated to Canada in 1952 from Germany and settled in Vancouver the following year. He quickly began photographing his new city, focusing on the neon-clad storefronts, working-class residents, and the quiet poetry and humour of daily city life. Herzog’s early use of colour was unusual in the 1950s, when art photography was still closely associated with black-and-white images. He worked almost exclusively with Kodachrome slide film throughout his career, and it wasn’t until the early 2000s that he was able to make archival pigment prints that matched the exceptional colour and intensity of his Kodachrome slides. Today his photographs are held in major museum collections around the world. Since his death in 2019, Equinox Gallery has exclusively represented the artist’s Estate, and in November 2026 a selection of Herzog’s photographs will be presented by Equinox at Paris Photo, the world’s largest international art fair dedicated to photography.
