Gathie Falk
September 6, 2025 - October 4, 2025
In the 1960s, Gathie Falk’s paintings emerged within the vibrant Vancouver art scene, which offered a steady stream of Pop art exhibitions that influenced local artists. While the Dadaist spirit of rebellion and the use of popular culture in Pop art appealed to Falk, she diverged from the genre’s full critique of consumerism, particularly as seen in its British origins. Instead, she focused on validating the objects, people, and habits of her own postwar domestic context, drawing deeply from her personal material culture. Falk was not directly inspired by mass media and advertising like her American counterparts, but these influences subtly informed her use of bold colours, simplified forms, and repetitive motifs. Her work embraced the visibility of the artist’s hand, resisting the slick, mechanical aesthetic of artists like Andy Warhol or James Rosenquist. Through her dreamlike and contemplative images of ordinary items—table, trees, household objects—Falk combined a quiet surrealism with spiritual undertones, creating handmade interpretations that celebrated the beauty and significance of the everyday.
