Fred Herzog: A Color Legacy is a vibrant celebration of one of the most influential pioneers in color street photography. Herzog, who immigrated from Germany and made Vancouver his home in 1953, spent decades quietly documenting the city’s changing face. He also traveled extensively with his camera through the United States, Mexico, Italy, Barbados among others. This exhibition and accompanying publication presents never-before-seen images from the artist’s estate, thoughtfully selected by his gallerist and friend, Andy Sylvester, offering an exciting expansion of Herzog’s color legacy.

Equinox Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of works by Fred Herzog for its participation in the 28th edition of Paris Photo, the world’s leading fair dedicated to photography and image-based art, taking place from November 13 to 16, 2025, at the Grand Palais in Paris.​
Equinox Gallery’s presentation situates Herzog’s work within an international dialogue on photographic history and the contemporary exploration of street photography, a fitting contribution to Paris Photo’s vibrant convergence of artists, collectors, and curators from around the globe.
This year marks a defining moment:
First showing of newly discovered, previously unseen images from Herzog’s archive. These vibrant works expand the narrative of his legacy and offer fresh perspectives on his decades documenting street life in colour​.
New book: Premiering at the fair, “A Color Legacy” (published by Hatje Cantz) includes 69 new photographs and essays by Sean O’Hagan, Helga Pakasaar, and Andy Sylvester. Images from this new book will be on view in our booth an exclusive preview for Paris Photo visitors.

Equinox Gallery presents a solo exhibition of street photographs by Fred Herzog, chronicling  the street life of Vancouver’s Chinatown and surrounding neighbourhoods in the 1950s and 1960s. Guest-curated by Carol Lee, co-founder and Chair of the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation and committed advocate for the revitalization of Chinatown and the Downtown Eastside, the works in this exhibition highlight the area’s history of vibrant street life, businesses and social centres. As a champion of Chinatown’s resilience and with deep knowledge of its past, Lee’s engagement with Herzog’s photographs offers a renewed appreciation for his artistic vision while emphasizing the significant cultural heritage in our city.

Black and White

Black and White is an exhibition celebrating Fred Herzog’s interest and affection for the city of Vancouver. Comprised of rarely seen black and white archival pigment prints, this exhibition is a rich and extended portrait of a city. A resident of Vancouver for over five decades, Fred Herzog worked downtown at St. Paul’s Hospital, and lived in the West End (later moving to the west side of the city). His walking tours regularly took him to the east side of the city where he was particularly attuned to Chinatown, Strathcona, the West End, and the working waterfronts. These areas sustained his interest for over 50 years.

of Time and Place

No other artist has chronicled Vancouver’s urban life as comprehensively and with such sustained insight as Herzog. He purchased his first camera in Germany at the age of 21, a Kodak Retina 1, which he knew about from his father who worked at Kodak during the war. Some of Herzog’s earliest photographs in Vancouver were taken on the Retina 1, but this model had a slow lens speed and did not contain a rangefinder and consequently, he favoured using the Lecia C for street photography as it was small and pocketable. He used different lenses while working in low light and crowded locations, all the while producing images that achieve a rare balance of composition and spontaneity. Bringing together early black and white images from the artist’s archive and his pioneering colour street photography, of Time and Place celebrates Fred Herzog’s understanding of the medium combined with the ability of photography to show “how you see and how you think”.

In collaboration with Westbank’s Pacific Gallery at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, Equinox Gallery is pleased to present Paying Attention, a group exhibition featuring the work of Berenice Abbott, William Eggleston, Walker Evans, Fred Herzog, Geoffrey James, Vivian Maier and George Tice. This exhibition looks at photographers whose work articulates fleeting, often overlooked moments in the evolution of their urban environments during periods of rapid growth and transition. Spanning several cities over the past 100 years, these photographers are united in the understanding that what is most familiar in modern life is often what is most impermanent, and its significance may only be felt once it has disappeared.
As wanderers through the city, the photographers in this exhibition utilize varying aesthetic strategies to present an alchemy of past, present, and future within a single image. From Berenice Abbott’s striking architectural images of New York City in the 1930s to Fred Herzog’s early colour scenes of a growing Vancouver on the precipice of modernity in the 1950s, the photographers in Paying Attention each explore the large and small ways our environments are shaped and reshaped over time.
