Shawn Hunt is a Heiltsuk artist born in Waglisla (Bella Bella), British Columbia. His practice is informed by his Indigenous heritage and the accompanying visual culture and traditions. Hunt develops characters and narratives, bringing them to life through sculpture and painting using traditional Northwest Coast design principles known as formline. Using symbolic representation as a way to access alternative worlds, Hunt’s imagery is ever-changing and shapeshifting, offering a contemporary interpretation of Heiltsuk cosmologies.

The First Moonrise

Equinox Gallery is pleased to present Shawn Hunt: The First Moonrise. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery and the first entirely devoted to painting and works on paper.
The First Moonrise is a continuation of Shawn Hunt’s exploration of Heiltsuk cosmologies through the development of imagined narratives and characters. Hunt’s creatures are constantly in a state of flux, serving as shapeshifters–supernatural figures that move and travel between human and spirit realms. By the glow of a hidden moon, the scenes in Shawn Hunt’s new paintings emerge and come to life.

The Beginning of Something

Shawn Hunt is a Heiltsuk artist born in Waglisla (Bella Bella), British Columbia. Hunt’s practice is directly informed by his Scottish, French and First Nations background and the visual culture and traditions that accompany it. He works with traditional Northwest Coast design principle, known as formline, to create abstract, surreal, and sculptural artworks based on ancestral Heiltsuk Cosmology. Hunt is always seeking to push the boundaries of the art form, often combining non-traditional ideas with innovative uses of materials and motifs in his work.
